Lichen Health, The Hero's Journey Center and Mons Sana are three, independent organizations working together to prove that community-based, land-based, holistic functional medicine can deliver life-saving (and life-changing) care to veterans and first responders struggling with addiction, PTSD, TBI, moral injury, and developmental trauma.

Like the fungus and algae of Lichen's namesake, each organization brings an independent piece of the puzzle, allowing us to pioneer next generation healing.

Led by CEO Brian W. Sims, CPRS-V, CEI, VSR, CPPS, an army veteran who overcame homelessness, Substance User Disorder, Moral Injury, Post Traumatic Stress, and a 2015 suicide attempt thanks to peer-supported recovery, including Psychedelic Assisted Recovery. Heroes Journey Center:

1. Delivers clinical excellence, via:

  • The Project Rebirth peer support model—the first accredited national peer-support program for veterans and first responders
  • Licensed mental health professionals who are also veterans with lived experience in trauma, PTSD, TBI, and recovery

2. Provides best-in-class clinical infrastructure, via

  • Treatment facilities and programming that covers the entire continuum of care, while also complying with land use and zoning laws: Detox (ASAM 3.7/3.5) → IOP (ASAM 2.1-2.7) Residential → Reintegration
  • ASAM Level 4 criteria assessments, with Joint Commission accreditation standards, creating a path to receive government contracts
  • A team of licensed clinicians to provide on-going, wrap around mental health and addiction treatment that is reimbursable via private-sector insurance

    3. Protects the outcomes they deliver, by:

    1. Providing continued peer support as participants return to their daily lives
    2. Training those who've experienced healing to help those on a similar path
    3. Fostering connection via a peer support network

Founded by Dr. Lance Cutsforth, an army veteran, D. Div and double board-certified Doctor of Functional Medicine. Mons Sana:

    1. Delivers the highest level of eco-spiritual care, via:

    • A diverse team of healers with deep experience integrating ancient, eco-spiritual healing practices with trauma-informed, modern medical care
    • A care model that honors the role that the land, elements, plans, animals and community play in helping people heal, in collaboration with entheogenic medicines

    2. Provides best-in-class, eco-spiritual infrastructure, including:

    • A land-based healing center that offers integrative healing via fire circles, water therapies, entheogenic plant medicine healing, nature immersion and other earth-based modalities
    • A 508(c)(1)(A) faith-based organization that empowers practitioners to provide spirit-first care and empowers donors to support it

    3. Protects the healing that participants experience, by:

    • Pioneering a cohort-based healing model that integrates the friends and family of those participating, because CPTSD and moral injury occur in relationship and can only be healed in relationship
    • Fostering ongoing cohort-support, to protect the gains participants experience
    • Welcoming alumni into a community that will continue to hold them

Galyn Burke, LMFT, LMHC, is a tech professional turned holistic trauma therapist. After years of watching people heal themselves with proper resourcing and support, she felt called to found a holistic healing network that weaves earth wisdom with modern science and technology to bring quantum healing to the world. Lichen is here to:

    1. Provide business infrastructure that connects and resources pilot partners, including:

    • A 501c3 nonprofit to raise and pass funds through to pilot partners to improve healing infrastructure and expand access to cutting-edge care that isn't covered via public and private sector insurance
    • A Land Trust that supports land protection, restoration and the development of next-generation healing infrastructure, while protecting community ownership and stewardship

    2. Provide a technology platform where pilot partners can collaborate to deliver care and foster community, by:

    • Facilitating seamless care team collaboration via the Concierge Platform
    • Supporting ongoing community wellbeing via the Community Platform

    3. Ensure that we remain at the forefront of next-generation healing, by:

    • Augmenting participant care with members of Lichen's Network of innovative practitioners
    • Maximizing safety and efficacy via hyper-personalized treatment planning and sequencing
    • Enriching outcome measurement via additional biological, psychological, social, spiritual, and ecological health markers

    The Solution

A Comprehensive Model with Four Pillars

    1. Land-Based Regulation: Nature immersion, fire circles, water therapies, land stewardship. Provided primarily through Mons Sana's retreat facility, with ongoing connection to land as a therapeutic partner
    2. Community-Based Healing: Pod cohorts of 8-12 individuals, shared meals, daily rituals, peer frameworks. Those who complete the program at Mons Sana become part of the ongoing healing community—because community-based healing for PTSD requires sustained connection, not episodic treatment
    3. Self-Regulation & Awareness: Somatic modalities, clinical treatment, integrative trauma care. Heroes Journey Center provides ASAM-compliant detox, IOP, and residential treatment with culturally competent, veteran-specific protocols
    4. Meaning & Purpose Reconstruction: Identity rebuilding, leadership tracks, alumni transition pathways. Warriors and first responders don't just recover—they become beacons of strength and wellness who often return as donors and peer supporters

    A Robust Measurement Protocol

Assemble three groups of veterans and first responders with representative health profiles.

    • Control Group: Receives the incumbent standard of care
    • Group 1: Lichen + Heroes Journey Center
    • Group 2: Lichen + Heroes Journey Center + Mons Sana

Compare health outcomes and care costs across the three groups over time to test our hypothesis that:

    • Holistic, functional medicine is more effective than the incumbent standard of care
    • Holistic, functional medicine is cheaper than the incumbent standard of care
    • When Entheogenic medicines help us re-member that our mental, physical, spiritual, social, environmental and systemic health are inextricably intertwined, we unlock higher levels of self-healing and growth
