Authentic connection, safety and trust you can’t game

You can filter your experience via your My-celium — the people, places, plants and animals you trust. Trusting people, and recommending the groups, communities, organizations and places you stand behind, are authentic person-to-person signals — never public scores. Trust stays private. A recommendation carries your name, but only to the people who are in your network. Either way there are no follower counts, no leaderboards, nothing to perform for. If something reaches you, someone you trust stands behind it.

That same web is the safety (and accountability) layer of the economy. Star ratings can be farmed; a path through your own relationships can’t be faked. Browse the whole marketplace, or narrow it to people, places, groups, communities or organizations you trust — or people they trust — and every listing shows you your path to the person behind it: “Trusted by someone you trust” — the mutual friend you’d want before meeting a stranger, built into the ground you walk on.

A Current-cy that maps the difference between contribution and compensation

The current economy overvalues some contributions, undervalues others, and doesn’t count whole categories of value at all. Lichen’s economy exists to correct that — an evolving algorithm assigns currency to all things: not just time spent or goods and services rendered, but the wisdom and skill it took to provide that value, and the risks certain people, plants and animals take with their own wellbeing to support the wellbeing of the whole.

Mapping the gap is the first half. Closing it is the second — and you can start closing it by hand today. The goal is bigger than one exchange at a time. Lichen’s algorithm reads the whole web at once — who’s seeking, who’s offering, what something is truly worth, and who has the capacity to pay for it — and weaves the strands together so nothing, and no one, is wasted. To bridge away from the systems that no longer serve the people, Lichen holds two economies, run side by side. Current-cy moves value out in the open — a transparent, dollar-pegged ledger, no speculation, the whole story visible and transferable into the incumbent economy we are all still beholden to. Offerings broker value exchanged within the ecosystem, freely, without money. One bridges the world as it is; the other builds the world as it could be.

Why philanthropy is still needed

The systems we inherited didn’t just deny our interconnection — they actively worked to destroy it, rewarding extraction, encouraging division, and profiting from perpetual suffering. The wounds inflicted by these systems are real. The suffering of the people trapped inside them are real. And the gap between the world we have and the world we want cannot be bridged by innovation, alone.

Trauma research shows that formative experiences encode subconscious beliefs that, if not intercepted with deep and targeted healing, shape our biology and behavior for life. Being born into trauma-based systems doesn’t just hurt — it programs. Unlearning those programs takes time, intention, and the right conditions. That is precisely why philanthropy is still needed to fund the container and create the conditions necessary to foment the biological, psychological, and spiritual healing, growth and transformation necessary to be a contributing member in a better world.

Philanthropy is the temporary scaffolding that holds people while the new floor is built beneath them. Lichen is a nonprofit with the vision, strategy and operations of a lean technology startup — membership and donations keep the platform running, and everything beyond that flows back into the network to restore balance.
